Role Overview
Fresh Air Camps is seeking experienced leaders to serve as Program Directors at our six summer camps in the Hudson Valley, NY. Program Directors play a critical role in the camp community by managing the day-to-day operations of specific camper programs, supervising a staff of 10-15, and organizing activities. Reporting to the Camp Director, this position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals with prior camp experience to take on a leadership role and support the success of the camp program.
This position requires living onsite at camp from June 11 – August 15, 2026, semi-private adult housing provided. Compensation for this role is $3,000 to $3,800 for the summer.
Program Director Roles & Key Responsibilities
Fresh Air Camps have multiple Program Director positions available to support the variety of programs offered at camp.
- Teen Program Director | Lead the Teen Leadership Program (ages 13–17) at either Camp ABC, Camp Hayden Marks, Camp Tommy, and Camp Junior. The Teen Program Director oversees the Teen Leadership Program, creating a supportive and enriching environment where campers can focus on personal development and future goals. This role is responsible for scheduling and coordinating all program events, ensuring the curriculum is delivered at a high level in collaboration with the Program Director.
- Director of Specialists | Lead the program experience by managing specialists and camp schedules. The Director of Specialists supports the overall management of camp by overseeing day-to-day programming, supervising specialist staff, coordinating camp schedules, and assisting with administrative operations. This role ensures campers receive high-quality experiential education throughout their encampment. Ideal for candidates with prior camp experience, this position offers a deeper look into the inner workings of camp leadership and program design.
- CIT Director | Mentor the next generation of camp leaders through training and hands-on guidance. The CIT Director leads a group of 10-40 Counselors-in-Training, providing mentorship as they prepare for future roles on camp staff. In partnership with CIT Counselors, the CIT Director helps plan and deliver the summer CIT schedule, facilitates daily training sessions, and supports ongoing camper development. This role includes communicating with parents, overseeing evaluations, supervising activities, and serving as a key liaison to the Summer Director and leadership team.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old by the start of camp (June 29, 2026).
- 3+ years of college or equivalent preferred; college graduates strongly preferred.
- Experience as a counselor or staff member in a residential camp setting.
- Commitment to work and live onsite at camp for the entire summer season (June 11 – August 15, 2026).
- Prior supervisory experience required.
As part of our commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace and to protecting the participants we serve, The Fresh Air Fund requires all camp staff to meet applicable vaccination requirements in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, and to be fully vaccinated against polio and MMR. As new public health issues arise, The Fresh Air Fund may require additional vaccinations. Proof of vaccination or an approved exemption will be required as a condition of employment.
Compensation & Benefits
- Compensation for this role is $3,000 to $3,800 for the summer.
- All meals and semi-private adult housing provided during camp.
